Check a mating

Compare two pedigrees and see how closely related a proposed mating is.

Last updated About 8 hours ago

Open Tools, then Check Mate.

The page compares pedigrees, finds common ancestors, and estimates Wright’s coefficient of inbreeding (COI) for the offspring of that mating.

Choose the animals

Select animals asks for a Male and a Female. Search with Search male... or Search female...

The list shows animals in the society registry. While it looks, it says Searching... If nothing matches, it says No animals found. Clear removes a selected animal. If the search fails, the message is Failed to search animals.

Search stays unavailable until both animals are chosen. Leaving one blank shows Select both a male and a female animal. Choosing the same animal twice shows Select two different animals.

While the comparison runs, the button reads Searching...

Pedigree comparison shows the male and female pedigrees side by side. Common ancestors are highlighted.

The Common ancestors legend marks how close they are:

  • 1st or 2nd generation
  • 3rd generation
  • 4th generation or later

Predicted COI is Wright’s coefficient of inbreeding for offspring from this mating. The scale runs from 0% to 25%+. The result shows a label, the percentage, and Wright’s F.

COILabel
Under 5%Low
5% to under 10%Mild linebreeding
10% to under 15%Moderate
15% to under 20%High
20% to under 25%Very high
25% and aboveExtreme

The estimate uses four generations of pedigree data. The page states how many common ancestors were found.

Common ancestors lists each shared ancestor, with Registration, Sire side, Dam side, and COI contribution. When none are found in those generations, the page says predicted COI is 0%.
